The biggest news headline spreading through the world today can arguably be the Coronavirus outbreak that recently popped up in China. The Coronavirus has been compared to the SARS (2002) and MERS (2012) outbreaks. The Coronavirus is a family of viruses that cause illness ranging from a common cold to more severe diseases. In December 2019, it appeared in Wuhan, China. The exact origins of the virus is still being investigated, however, the virus most likely originally surfaced from an animal source but has since spread from person-to-person.
As of January 29, the virus has infected 6,000 in China; officially becoming larger than SARS in 2002. Estimates for total infections are 6,150 globally, with 132 deaths. Although there have been a few confirmed cases in the U.S., there have been no deaths, making the immediate risk of being exposed low.
How to prevent being exposed to the Coronavirus
In humans, the Coronavirus is said to spread via airborne droplets of fluid produced by infected individuals. The Center for Disease Control recommends taking these simple preventive steps to avoid further spreading:
Wash your hands
Yes, it may sound like a cliché but it can’t be recommended enough. Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps kill viruses. If you don’t have soap and water at arms reach, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Avoid touching your face
If you have picked up some sort of virus on your hands, it can enter your body through your mouth, nose, and eyes. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
Stay home
It’s simple: if you’re feeling sick, stay home.
Disinfect your home/surroundings
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces both in your home and work.
While not necessary now, there are people that are already stocking up on masks that will prevent the transmission of the virus. Only an N95 mask can fully block the spread of the virus, as long as it is worn properly.
While they are more expensive than other masks, they are the most certain. We are ordering N95 masks for our patients that will be much more affordable than the others that are available online.
