Each month this year, we have pledged to donate to local organizations. For May, we are excited to announce that we have chosen Huntington Beach Community Garden (HBCG) as our non-profit organization of the month.
HBCG’s mission is to educate children and adults about organic gardening and to provide individuals resources and land where they can grow fruits and vegetables, flowers, and herbs for their consumption. HBCG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of volunteers who donate their time and all the ingredients to grow delicious organic fruits and vegetables year round. They opened their garden in 2011 and have been fortunate to celebrate their success with our community.
The gardeners donate 10% of their yield to local charities throughout Huntington Beach.
We spoke to a representative of HBCG and here are a few words from her:
Q: Talk a little bit about HBCG’s history. When was it established and what led you to create it?
A: The Huntington Beach Community Garden (HBCG) received their approved Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) from the City of Huntington Beach and Southern California Edison on June 21, 2010. The MOU solidified several years of dreaming and planning by many volunteers, and the transformation of unused land under the power lines into a Community Garden of 110 plots began.
Q: Where are you located?
A: The garden address is 10172 Atlanta Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92646. It is just a short walk from where Atlanta dead ends into the Santa Ana River.
Q: If people are considering volunteering, how would you recommend them reach out?
A: Please check our website hbcommunitygarden.org and Facebook page for more information. We still have a few plots available!
