Overview
This test screens for HIV, a sexually transmitted disease that may lead to AIDS if untreated. The virus slowly makes the immune system weaker, which makes it more difficult for the body to fight infections. If you are sexually active, especially with changing partners, it is advisable to get tested regularly. Note that standard HIV tests may not detect acute HIV infections as it takes about 3-12 weeks after getting infected for this test to become positive. If you had a high-risk encounter within the last 72 hours, consult one of our doctors and discuss getting post-exposure prophylaxis to lower the risk of a new HIV infection.
